An Octopus Hydraulic Linear Actuator provides an efficient solution for controlling the rudder on boats equipped with mechanical steering systems. This actuator consists of a reversing pump and a marine hydraulic cylinder, which are securely mounted to the rudder tiller-arm or quadrant. When not in use, the cylinder operates freely with the rudder. Upon activation of the autopilot, a solenoid valve locks the cylinder, allowing steering commands from the pilot to drive the D.C. motor, which in turn operates the pump to maneuver the cylinder. Once de-energized, the solenoid valve disengages the pilot from the rudder. The actuator is equipped with a translucent oil reservoir for easy fluid level monitoring. With only five moving parts, this mechanical simplicity enhances reliability and ease of maintenance compared to complex gear and screw actuators, making it a preferred choice for offshore boating. The actuators are shipped pre-filled with oil, eliminating the need for additional plumbing.
